History

Is the Oldest and Largest continuously running project/event produced by the Virginia Beach Jaycees. Currently in its 49th year, VANS Presents the 49th Annual Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing Championships www.surfecsc.com is the oldest Surfing competition in the Western Hemishpere (2nd only to Bells Beach AUS). The majority of proceeds from the event directly beneift Camp Virginia Jaycees www.campvajc.org which is a Summer time outdoor recreational and educational facility for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Camp, a 501 (c) 3 organization, is located in Bedford, Virginia. The remainder of the proceeds go towards the funding of projects within Virginia Beach itself, such as: Christmas Shopping Tour, First Citizen, Flame of Hope, etc.

The event has grown tremendously over the years and now attracts hundreds of thousands of spectators annually. Currently the 49th annual event has been sanctioned by the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) www.aspworldtour.com as a 4 star rated event on the VANS Pro Tour with a total purse of $115,000. In addition, a Pro Volleyball Tournament has been added with a purse of $50,000. While the event does draw sponsorship from national/worldwide companies, it is the efforts of local companies that has made the event what it is. The sponsorhip of the event by Coastal Edge www..coastaledge.com , a Virginia Beach based surf shop with multiple locations in the area, has made it possible to bring over 40 different surf and action sports vendors to the event through the efforts of owner Deepak “D.” Nachnani. “Vendor Village” as it has been nick named, now provides a venue for companies to showcase their products and brands and includes music stages and halfpipes where Skate and BMX demos are performed by star talent. D Shares the vision of the Virginia Beach Jaycees in creating the best possible event for all involved; from the spectators to the competitors to the volunteers and especially to the city of Virginia Beach itself. The ECSC also relies on the efforts of 500+ volunteers consisting of current and past Jaycees state wide as well as the public at large to make the event happen. George Alcaraz, a past Jaycee and former Chairman of the event; was brought on as the General Manager of the event and has been instrumental over the past years in seeing the event grow by double and triple during his tenure. It is the combined efforts of all of these individuals that make this event possible and is unique among both Surfing Competitions and Jaycees projects alike. We hope to see you on the beach in August.
